When the Analyst selects the icon to display
the new data icon on the workstation , the ExamFolder program must
start a computer program that presents the data to the Analyst. To
determine the correct program to start, the ExamFolder program has
a table which correlates each data document type to the required computer
presentation program (see Figure 4). In practice, determining the
data document type can use several methods, including:
- Some part of the file name
- Special codes placed in the data
As the presentation program is initiated, it is given the file name
of the data document to be presented.
X Window System(X)
When the presentation program is initiated, it need not run locally
on the Analyst's workstation. The correlation table also gives the
name of the workstation where the presentation program can be run.
Programs written to use the X Window System can run on one workstation
and present data on another. Using ExamFolder and X, the Analyst uses
exactly the same gestures to start the program and interact with it
whether it runs locally on the same workstation or remotely on a different
workstation. Remote execution in combination with X allows virtually
any hardware/software network.
